Virtual Friend - a cat alien, you really should see this!

What on earth, I hear you say, has Catnip got for us this time?? This my friend, is a Virtual Friend, a rather amazing little program that puts you in control of a 3D animated talking little being, in this case an alien! You can morph it into 4 different heads, this cat one, a monkey, a baby, a weird pointy-headed guy with a scary voice and the basic "grey" type alien, round headed, all with big blue eyes. They can say whatever you type in the box, or you can pre-type whole texts for them to say back to you, the darn thing even sings! The one pictured is the first release, Roswell 1.0 but a new version is out now from Haptek if you want to try out both! Utterly amazing stuff, as ever! Win95 only. Shareware.

So, I'm a little behind the times but I just discovered the fabulous Lara Croft, star of the equally stunning Tomb Raider games. And while browsing around for Lara stuff, I came across this neat little trick, to replace those boring old icons in the Win95 Start menu with the lovely Lara herself. Rather cool, in a sad sort of way. The idea is a simple one, and no doubt with a little effort you could make your own icon picture if Lara isn't your thing... The tiny file makes changes to your Registry, but is easy to use, and can be changed back just as easily! Full instructions are given with the file, and you can choose from several images. Go on, improve your desktop today! Freeware.

A special Thingummy to mark my 26th birthday!

MOPY fish

Forget those annoying little virtual pets that look like little blobs, this is the real thing. You could almost believe there's a fish swimming inside your monitor. MOPy fish looks fabulous, interacts with you and needs feeding every day. Over time the points you collect by looking after him add up to a rock, bubbles and thermometer for his "tank" - Hewlett-Packard hope to encourage you to make multiple original copies (or MOPies) so the more you MOPy the faster your fish gets treats, but he'll get them anyways. If you neglect your MOPy he'll die (though you can revive him again, thankfully!). Truly a fine piece of software, if you never download anything else, you have to have the MOPy fish! Freeware.
